Description
The town of Calasetta has about 3000 inhabitants and is located at the north-western extremity of the island of Sant’Antioco. It is a quaint town, where the white colour of the houses contrasts with the light blue colour of the sky and the green of the Mediterranean maquis. The population of Calasetta, like the one of Carloforte, speaks a dialect called ‘tabarchino’, a variant of the Ligurian language. In fact, the town was founded around the mid-1700s by Ligurian settlers that had left the Tunisian island of Tabarka, where they had settled around the 1500s. Calasetta is well-known for the production of fine wines and for the cuisine based on fish which shows traces of the Ligurian and Arab cultures.
Being a small town whose economy is partly based on tourism, it offers every kind of facility.
