Description
Carloforte is a town of about 6500 inhabitants, and it is the only one in the island of San Pietro. Similarly to Calasetta, it was founded at the beginning of the 1700s by Ligurian settlers, who arrived from the Tunisian island of Tabarka to look for a safer place. They speak Tabarchino, a variant of the Genoese language. Many of the local usages as well as the architecture have strongly been influenced by the Ligurian culture. Today Carloforte is a “Honorary municipality” of the Province of Genoa. Visiting this enchanting town, it is worth trying the famous pesto, called cashcà, and the various different ways in which tuna is cooked. All the products of its cuisine have Arabic and Ligurian elements. In May and June takes place the so called Girotonno, an important culinary festival held in conjunction with the tuna massacre (mattanza).
Being a small town whose economy is partly based on tourism, it offers all kinds of facilities.
