Description
The church of San Giovanni Sinis stands in the outskirts of the town that bears the same name. It was built during the paleo-Christian times, between the 5th and the 6th century A.D., and it is one of the most ancient churches still in use today. The original structure had a central plan covered by a dome. In the 11th century A.D. the building was widened and was given the typical shape of the proto-Christian churches. The interior was divided into three naves capped by barrel vaults and separated by solid pillars united by low arches. It has been built using sandstone blocks taken away from the walls of the nearby city of Tharros.
