Tavolara Island is the biggest island among the Molara, Piana and Cavalli islands and other minor Islands in front of the northeast coast of Sardinia, which stretches from Capo Ceraso, north, out to Capo Coda Cavallo, south. The whole area is part of the Tavolara – Punta Coda Cavallo Protected Marine Area. Tavolara is an imposing limestone formation, its highest point is of 564 metres with Punta Cannone. This is the only limestone formation of the area, on the western edge there are some beaches and on the eastern edge there are very high rock walls which drop straight down to the sea. It hosts a variety of bird species, among the blooming vegetation there are some endemic rarities and the only terrestrial animals that live there, are the descents of the original goats which were abandoned when the inhabitants moved back to Sardinia in the sixties.
