Itineray
From Iglesias take the SS 126 in the direction of Sant’Antioco. After about 11 km you will reach the junction to Nebida and Masua. Turn right onto the SP 83, go past the beach of Fontanamare and the town of Nebida, and you will get to Masua after about 12 km. From Masua, follow the signposts to the beach of Pan di Zucchero. An unpaved road stretches from the car park of this beach to the entrance of the mines of Porto Flavia, where you will arrive after about 1.5 km.
Description
Porto Flavia is an example of high technology. It was built in 1924 by the engineer Cesare Vecelli, who decided to name it after his eldest daughter. In order to address the high transport costs of the minerals, two tunnels have been planned and excavated inside the mountain. These two overlapping galleries end at a rock face overlooking the sea. The minerals used to arrive through a conveyor belt at the end of the galleries where they were charged directly onto cargo boats in the anchorage. Thanks to the guided tours, it is possible to go for an interesting walk inside this incredible place.
Car park, guided tours.
