Description
La Roccia dell’Orso (Bear’s Rock) is an extraordinary natural monument consisting in a big granitic mass modelled by the atmospheric agents. It is shaped like a big bear crouched on his back legs. You will find this natural sculpture on a promontory 122 metres high which drops straight down to the sea, it is known from the ancient times. It is visible from far away, in fact it was used as a reference point from the first navigators. It was also cited by the geographer and astronomer Ptolemy in the second century a.c., and it is assumed that Homer placed there the Ulysses docking episode in Lestrigoni land.
